Republican Herschel Walker exempts his home in Texas from $1,500 in taxes for principal residents only, while run for senate in georgia according to reports.
According to publicly available tax documents first reported by CNN, Walker is listed for a homestead tax exemption on his Dallas home, saving him about $1,500. A spokesman for the Tarrant County Tax Assessor’s office told CNN that Walker applied for tax credits in 2021 and 2022 even after he began his application for Senate in Peach State.
Walker is scheduled to face incumbent Democrat Raphael Warnock in a the second round of elections on December 6, after both candidates failed to garner at least 50% of the vote in a midterm race earlier this month.

According to the Texas Comptroller’s website, Texas residents are allowed to claim the homestead exemption even if you’ve moved for less than two years — as long as you don’t establish permanent residence elsewhere. According to the site, only the homeowner’s primary residents are eligible for tax credits.

The US Constitution requires that candidates own the state they will represent. The state of Georgia has about 15 rules that determine a candidate’s residence, including that if a candidate claims a homestead exemption, that home will be considered their permanent residence.
