ELKVIEW, WV – Three people were killed and two were injured in a crash on Interstate 79 in West Virginia on Thanksgiving Day, authorities said.

A car carrying two adults and three children was traveling from Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, to Kentucky when it crashed early Thursday near Elkview, north of Charleston, the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The SUV, which was traveling south, left the right shoulder of the roadway, went into a ditch and came to rest on a slope. No other vehicles were involved.

Two adult women, 71-year-old Nigat Syeda and 33-year-old Hira Syeda, were killed along with their child. Two other children were taken to the hospital and are in critical condition, the report said.

Investigators believe seat belts were not being used at the time of the crash.
