PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Police are investigating a homicide in Northeast Philadelphia. Sources tell Action News the victim was shot Sunday night while his family was also in the home.

The shooting happened in the 7700 block of Fairfield Street around 8 p.m. Sunday.

Investigators are now looking for a group of suspects in the shooting death of a 37-year-old man during a search of his home.

According to police, the victim, his wife and children had just returned home from shopping when the group attacked the man and forced him inside.

The thieves made off with cash and jewelery before returning to the victim, who was lying face down in the kitchen. Sources say they told the victim to stand up, and that’s when they shot him.

“Oh, we’ve been in this house for 46 years and this is the first time we’ve had an incident like this,” said Claudia Acetti.

It is a quiet area where people have lived for decades.

One neighbor, who did not want to be named, was returning home around the time the incident happened. She almost got hit by a speeding car.

“We were driving home crossing the boulevard and this car came out of the driveway so fast it almost hit us. We thought it was close. Then we got home and heard the sirens,” said the neighbor.

The county’s homicide rate is up 16% over the past three years, but it’s still below the city’s current homicide rate. These figures are in accordance with 6abc Security watcher in the neighborhood.
