History lesson: The The 1946 classic It’s a Wonderful Life is set in the fictional Bedford Falls. Like many of its screen counterparts, the film was filmed in california but many believe that Bedford Falls is based on the real Seneca Falls in upstate New York. The city even has an It’s a Wonderful Life museum and is celebrating an annual festival honoring cinema in December.

So what is the connection? One piece of evidence points to a visit by director Frank Capra to Seneca Falls in 1945 while working on the script with the screenwriters. There’s also a nod to the architecture of Seneca Falls. Jimmy Hawkins, who played George Bailey’s son Tommy in the film, told Country Living that “Bedford Falls has a lot of Seneca Falls,” pointing out the similarities between the Seneca Falls Bridge and the one in the film where George made his major decision. The museum too notes the similarity between local homes, train stations, and even the affordable housing projects mentioned in the film, Bailey Brothers Building and Loan.

Hawkins works as an advisor at the Museum of Wonderful Life alongside on-screen siblings Carol Coombs (Janey Bailey) and Carolyn Grimes (Zuzu Bailey).

History lesson: Can you imagine growing up without the Christmas season? The Puritans did it a a criminal offense for public celebration a holiday in Massachusetts from 1659 to 1681. According to History.com, after the overthrow of King Charles I, the Puritans declared December 25 a day of “fasting and humiliation” for the supposed sins of the English. Puritans in Massachusetts followed suit, banning the holiday with a quick message: celebrating Christmas carries a fine. The ban was due both to a Puritan interpretation of the Bible, which they said did not mention the celebration of the holiday, and to an aversion to noisy festive events. The Massachusetts Bay Colony repealed the ban in 1681, but it wasn’t until 1856 that Christmas became a state holiday in the state.
