New York The district attorney downgraded 52% of all felony cases to misdemeanors in 2022, down from 39% in 2019, according to data posted on the DA’s website.
In 2021, District Attorney Alvin Bragg campaigned for the benefit criminal justice reformpledging to support changes to the law that allow cash bail for violent crimes.

Bragg won his campaign and took office on January 1, and a few days later he issued a “Day One” memo to staff, ordering them to downgrade certain crimes, including armed robberies of commercial businesses, and no longer seek prison terms for many serious offences.

New York Police Department Commissioner Kichant Sewell wrote in a leaked email at the time that Bragg’s policies could endanger the public and undermine justice for victims.
The latest NYPD crime reports show a 27.6% increase in total crime, with 112,755 crimes reported in 2022, compared to 88,394 for the same period in 2021.

During the same period, it increased by 13.2%. severe attacks, jumping from 20,563 to 23,270 this year; rapes increased from 1,336 to 1,471; robberies from 12,033 to 15,639; and transit crimes from 1316 to 1865.
Murders in the Big Apple dropped from 432 to 372, and shootings from 1,688 to 1,438.
According to data on his website, Bragg and his department declined to prosecute 35% more serious cases than in 2019, taking into account court system delays in handling cases in 2020-22.
The prosecutor’s office report also shows that bail was requested in 2,518 felony cases in 2022, compared to 3,848 in 2019.
