With Thanksgiving travel in full swing, passenger numbers on planes and trains are expected to return to near-pandemic levels. AAA predicts that approximately 1.5 million New Jersey residents will drive 50 miles or more over the holiday weekend, up about 2% from last year. What has not normalized is the gas station prices. Robert Sinclair Jr., AAA Northeast’s senior public affairs manager, says driving remains the most popular form of travel, but it’s also expensive.
Henry Harteveldt, a travel industry analyst at Atmosphere Research Group, estimated that airfares also rose by about 45%. “It’s a huge increase,” he said. “But I think an important reason why people travel—and this is what we show in our research—is that we do things now because we don’t know what we might do in the future. We don’t know when something will happen that limits our ability to travel again.”
