MOUNT HOPE, Bronx (WABC) — Police are investigating after a three-year-old boy and an 11-month-old boy were beaten to death in the Bronx.

It happened at the family shelter at Echo Place in Mount Hope on Saturday night. The boys were found to have numerous stab wounds to the neck and torso.

The NYPD issued an update Saturday night:

When the police arrived, they found the mother in the third floor apartment, behaving erratically. Sources say that the mother then tried to burn down the apartment with a stove, and then turned on the water.

After that, the police detained the mother. She was taken to the hospital for examination.

A second 911 call came in less than an hour later, reporting two unresponsive children in the same location. Law enforcement officers returned to the apartment, where they found three-year-old and 11-month-old children with stab wounds. Officers and another family member tried to resuscitate the boys, but were unsuccessful.

Neighbors down the hall say the building’s walls are thin. They say the parents of the two young boys had been arguing and yelling earlier in the night. They also heard the boys’ father hysterically calling for help.

“He was screaming hysterically. He shouted “help”. And I went and opened the door and saw him walking down the hall with two boys in his arms. They were dead, they were dead. There was blood everywhere,” Shannon Holyfield said.

The boys were rushed to Columbia Presbyterian Institute in extremely critical condition, where they later died.
