For many people leaving prison, challenges such as finding work, accessing housing, health care, and even obtaining a Social Security card can be overwhelming. That’s where the New Jersey Reentry Corporation comes in. The nonprofit, run by former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey, announced this week that it is expanding into Union County.
Keynote speaker Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver became emotional as she discussed the importance of second chances, sharing the story of one young man’s journey. “He’s so frustrated trying to get a job, find a place to live… People look at you like you’re some kind of anomaly, that you’re not human,” Oliver said.
Reentry Corporation’s customers say the diversity of resources is key to their success, but nothing is more important than the compassion they show there.
“It helped me get my Social Security, it helped me get my birth certificate, it helped me get a job. This program helps you, they care about you, they show you love,” said Efren Maisonet.
