Andrew Weber, who served as chief legal counsel to Gov. Jim Florio from 1990 to 1992, died on October 22. He was 74 years old.
Weber died 27 days after Florio’s death.
He served as the Gloucester County District Attorney from 1980 until joining the Florio administration in January 1990. He also served as municipal attorney in Washington and Glassboro, as well as chairman of the Lindenwold Rent Control Board in the 1970s and became attorney for the Lindenwold Zoning Board. in 1978.
After Florio’s election in 1989, Weber’s name appeared on a short list of potential attorney general candidates, but former US Attorney Robert Del Tufo won the position. Instead, Weber was appointed to another cabinet post: personnel commissioner. The state Senate unanimously confirmed his nomination.
Nine months into his administration, Florio reshuffled his senior staff and appointed his chief counsel, John Sweeney, a former Burlington County assemblyman, to head the state’s gaming control division. Florio named Weber, 42, his new lead attorney.
Weber resigned in 1992 to join a private law firm and was replaced by Robert Decotis. Florio then appointed him to the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority and made him chairman.
Weber later served as an advisor to the New Jersey Conference of Mayors, interim executive director of the Willingboro Municipal Utilities Authority, a trustee of Cooper Hospital, and chairman of the Mount Laurel Democratic Municipality.
He is survived by his wife Rita and two children.
