Winslow Mayor Barry M. Wright has been diagnosed Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, died a month ago. He was 69 years old.
Prior to being elected to the city committee in 2002, Wright spent 27 years as a police officer in the town of Winslow, and was re-elected twice before running for mayor in 2011. He defeated Squire Service at the Democratic primaries by a small margin of about 30 votes.
In the general election, Wright ousted Republican Mayor Sue Ann Metzner, gaining about 68% of the vote. Wright was re-elected in 2015 and 2019.
“He said his dream was to become mayor one day because he loved helping others,” a statement from the township’s website said. “The mayor loved to serve this community every day, and we ask you to keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
