Businessman Larry Weinstein has made his third bid to unseat North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sack in the May 2023 nonpartisan municipal election.

“Too many North Bergen residents feel that their local government is not working on their behalf,” Weinstein said in a statement. “Our current administration has been in power for almost four decades. Everything that could be done by now, had to be done by now. It’s time for new energy, new ideas and new leadership.”

Weinstein promised new schools, increased tenant protections, upgraded infrastructure and greater transparency.

“I’m trying to make a difference in North Bergen,” he said.

In 2019, Sacco beat Weinstein by more than 2-1.

In that race, Sacco led his slate — North Bergen elected five commissioners — with 8,907 votes; Incumbent Julio Marenko finished fifth with 8,393 votes, while Weinstein finished sixth with 4,103 votes.

In 2015, Sacco beat Weinstein in a head-to-head battle by 32 percentage points and 8,246 votes to 4,246.

None of the candidates announced their lists of candidates. Marenko is expected to go to the State Assembly, Sacco will have at least one new running mate.
