“Obviously people are scared. They are afraid. Nobody wants a war. Everyone knows that if it starts, it will be a bloodbath, ”said Arduor Bakery and Coffee owner Ilya Zayarchenko in Ridley Park. “There are two very proud nations, Russia and Ukraine.”
Zayarchanka says she knows firsthand what it’s like to be involved in the war in Ukraine.
Until he fought, he made coffee and baked cakes for the soldiers.
“When the war in Ukraine began in 2014, I had the opportunity to go with friends to the front and, you know, bake there for the soldiers,” – added Zayarchenko.
After talking to relatives at home, Zayarchanka says they are trying to go about their daily lives.
“They are afraid, but at the same time they do not panic,” he said.
This was also reported by Action News by a priest of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of St. Nicholas, as he also has a family in Ukraine.
The church provided traditional Ukrainian food and pastries for the Fairmount community on Saturday.
“What Ukrainians really want from other countries is support. This is not to do our work for us, but to support us, ”said Ruslan Borovy, a priest at the Ukrainian Catholic Church of St. Nicholas.
The Ukrainian community is asking for unity in prayer in the hope of diplomacy.
