In 2022, the world witnessed the series major disasters leading to mass destruction, the destruction of homes and communities, and in some cases, loss of life.
Here’s a look at some of the biggest natural disasters in the United States and around the world in 2022:
UNDERWATER VOLCANO Eruption IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN
On January 15, 2022, an underwater volcano exploded in the South Pacific Ocean, off the island of the Kingdom of Tonga. The eruption triggered tsunami warnings in the archipelago and even on the west coast of the United States.

Surveillance flights by the New Zealand and Australian Defense Forces showed extensive damage to homes, roads, water, reservoirs and other infrastructure along the west coast of Tongatapu. Seismologists said it was one of the largest recorded eruptions since Krakatoa in 1883.
CALIFORNIA EARTHQUAKE KILLS TWO, INJURES 11 MORE
MORE THAN 1700 PEOPLE DIE IN FLOOD IN PAKISTAN
Record flooding hit Pakistan between June and October, washing away thousands of homes and killing at least 1739 people.
The government estimated at least $30 billion in damage as crops, roads, roads, livestock, bridges, homes, schools and medical facilities were washed away.

MASSIVE FIRES IN CALIFORNIA
Although a series of wildfires engulfed California from January to October, relatively fewer than in previous years. Cal Fire Ratings there were a total of about 7,592 incidents burning approximately 362,271 hectares and nine fatalities. More than 100 structures were damaged and approximately 772 were destroyed.

EAST COAST STORM LEFT 100,000 WITHOUT POWER, AT LEAST 3 DEAD
A northeast winter storm in January, a blizzard hit many areas and more than 100,000 people were left without electricity.
In the New York area, snow levels ranged from a few inches in some areas north and west of the city to more than 2 feet in Islip, Long Island, according to the National Weather Service.

Warren, Rhode Island gained more than 2 feet and Norwich, Connecticut finished with nearly two feet. Some areas of Maine and New Hampshire also received more than a foot.

An elderly man fell into a pool while clearing snow in Southold and was pronounced dead after resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, Suffolk County police said. Nassau County officials said two men, ages 53 and 75, died in Syasset Tower while clearing snow.
EARTHQUAKE IN AFGHANISTANAN KILLS MINIMUM 1036
Major earthquake in eastern Afghanistan About 1,036 people died and at least 1,500 were injured in June – the deadliest year was 2002, when a 6.1-magnitude earthquake killed about 1,000 people.

The 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the country’s Paktika province just 10 months after the chaotic withdrawal and departure of most of the international community from the region, complicating efforts to provide aid to the country’s 38 million people.

The earthquake destroyed hundreds of houses in Paktika, dozens remain under rubble. Countless buildings were also damaged in Khost province.
