South Dakota Governor Christie Noem A winter storm response emergency was declared Thursday evening and the state National Guard was activated to deliver firewood from the Black Hills Forest Service to the Rosebud Sioux Tribe.
Rosebud Sioux Tribal Emergency Manager Robert Oliver said Thursday that tribal officials were working to clear roads to get propane and firewood to homes, but they faced unrelenting winds that created drifts more than 10 feet high in some places. The tribe has asked for help, and Noem’s office said it is working with other tribal governments as well as local officials across the state to respond to the cold temperatures and blizzard-like conditions.
“Under the leadership of the Office of Emergency Management, we will continue to help everyone South Dakota communities weather these storms together,” Noem said in a statement.
