I hate being dragged into it Time’s Person of the Year Discussion, which is basically a giant publicity stunt. But here I am.

The annual Time Awards has such a long history that it has acquired a certain importance, and I hardly regret that the magazine is trying to milk it.

The first phase of the hype began when Time executive editor Ben Goldberger made the television rounds to reveal the names of the finalists.

WHY TRUMP’S “CUTTING DOWN” OF THE CONSTITUTION, DEMANDING RENEWAL OR CHANGE, CAUSED ANXIETY

Liz Cheney is on the list – so a Trump-bashing magazine can say, look, we elected a Republican, but one who ran against Donald Trump.

Elon Musk is on the list, but he was the winner last year – making his selection much less likely, even with his devastating takeover of Twitter.

Janet Yellen is listed as possibly the most reticent Treasury Secretary in modern history. It’s not real. They needed one Democrat.

Xi Jinping? Nor does it happen.

And then there’s Ron DeSantis. This sparked a barrage of criticism on “Morning Joe,” with Mika Brzezinski declaring, “Ron DeSantis makes no sense to me!”

Well, Goldberger said, “he won re-election by a landslide in Florida and is the favorite to be the Republican presidential nominee.”

Let’s pause for a moment because there is DeSantis is truly the favorite in 2024? Yes, he won a near landslide in Florida and shrewdly established himself as a national figure, but it’s also possible he won’t run. Hardly, but possible.

If the governor does jump, it won’t be until the summer of 2023. Trump could beat him, or DeSantis could split the anti-Trump vote with several other candidates (now John Bolton talking about running), handing the candidacy to the former president.

Either way, DeSantis could be a legitimate Man of the Year contender next year, maybe even a lock, but how do you give him the guts in 2022?

Conservatives took to Twitter Tuesday to fire up the football when GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis is projected to beat Charlie Crist to another term as Florida's chief executive.

Unless Time is just trying to stir up a little controversy.

But if you look at the history, then you should nod at the name from the list, which was mentioned almost as an afterthought: Uladzimir Zelenskyi.

TRUMP FINALLY GIVES UP AS SENATE REPUBLICANS PUSH HIM INTO DINING WITH 2 ANTI-SEMITES

He is a leader who inspired and rallied his country against seemingly overwhelming odds to repel a brutal and unprovoked Russian invasion filled with war crimes and deliberate attacks on civilians. Not only that, his brave troops drove the Russians out of Kherson and regained a significant part of the territory along its eastern border. Literally yesterday, Ukrainian drones struck targets in Russia for the second day in a row.

This is the former sitcom star welcomed by parliaments around the world, who gave endless interviews despite the risks, who successfully pressured the Biden administration and other Western governments to provide tens of billions of dollars in aid and much-needed weapons. .

And make no mistake: this is the biggest land war in Europe since World War II. If Vladimir Putin If successful, it would be a major blow to the NATO alliance and a victory for this dictator’s efforts to bring the Soviet empire under his sole control.

But I think that Zelensky’s victory in this competition is very unlikely. The reason? This is not a controversial choice. Most people would say yes, he deserves it, depriving Time of the vociferous debate needed to make it a 12-plus hour story.

But he is an obvious choice.
