Lawrence City Councilman Mike Powers, who has represented the Mercer County city since 2003 and served two terms as mayor, announced today that he will not seek re-election in 2023.
“Due to the impending departure of Kathleen Lewis from the council, I have been approached by a number of qualified Democrats interested in serving on the Lawrence Township Council,” Powers said in a statement. “I want these people to know from the start that there will be at least two opportunities to run for council in the November 2023 election.”
Lewis will soon take over as Mercer County Commissioner, which she won in November after defeating six other Democrats spring convention of the Democratic Party. Powers twice tried to make the same leap to county commissioner, at 2019 year and 2021 yearbut unsuccessfully.
There is already at least one candidate for the village council in 2023: Joe Fortevice chair of the New Jersey LGBTQ State Democratic Committee.
