The shooting took place shortly before 7.30 pm on Barbara Street, house 1700.
For security reasons, officials say they will not name the fired officers involved in the case until the investigation into the threats is completed.
“While we cannot release the names of the officers being released at this time, I want to assure the public that we continue to conduct this investigation in an honest, thorough and prompt manner,” said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Daniel Outlo. statement. “We understand the importance of transparency and continue to strive to provide as much detail as possible without compromising the integrity of the investigation. We expect further updates to be provided in the near future.”
Officials say 12-year-old Thomas Siderio Jr. was killed by officers after police came under fire.
Authorities said four officers from the Southern Task Force were conducting surveillance inside the car without identification as part of a firearms investigation in the area of 18th Street and Johnston around 7:24 p.m.
Police say officers spotted two men on the 18th and Barbara, one of whom was wanted for questioning in connection with questionable reports on social media about the stolen gun.
Officers drove up to the two men, stopped a few feet away, and then turned on the red and blue alarms on their unidentified car, police said.
According to police, it was then that police heard gunfire and the sound of broken glass from the rear passenger window.
One of the officers was hit in the face and eyes by broken glass. Police say the bullet went through the rear passenger window glass, hit the inner door frame, then went into the passenger’s headrest before stopping in the flow of the car.
Two officers got out of the car and shot at Siderio, who police said still had a gun.
Police say one of these officers fired twice, hitting Siderio in the right upper back and a bullet coming out of his left chest.
He was rushed to hospital and pronounced dead at 7:29 p.m.
The footage was recorded on a doorbell camera around the 18th and Barbara. You hear one first shot and then four more.
Police say a 9mm laser-equipped pistol in Siderio has been stolen. The gun was found at the scene and one cartridge was found in the chamber and five in the store, police said.
Another man, a 17-year-old teenager wanted for questioning in connection with a firearms investigation, was detained by police but released pending further investigation.
Deputy Commissioner Benjamin Nish said police could not say on Wednesday that Siderio had shot at a police car and whether he had aimed his weapon at officers if he was fleeing.
“Although the forensic expert shows that the bullet hit him in the back, it does not mean that he ran away or that the gun was not aimed at the officer or near him. That’s not to say he wasn’t “not going to be a threat to the officer,” Nish said.
The teen’s stepfather told Action News that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“I heard when the policemen drove up without a sign, they thought someone was jumping on them because they pressed the brakes. So the child was shot because he thought someone was going to shoot him, ”said teenage stepfather Salman Khan. .
Action News received a video in which officers walk back and forth waiting for ambulances.
Neighbors say Siderio was a troubled child. He was reported missing when he was 11 years old, but was found two days later.
Officers involved in the shooting were brought to administrative duty until the results of the investigation.
