While the producers offered a minute of silence for Ukraine on the second hour of Sunday’s broadcast, celebrities expressed support for the war-torn nation and its citizens on the red carpet.
The star of the film “The Power of the Dog” Benedict Cumberbatch expressed solidarity with the people of Ukraine, expressing horror at the images he saw during the conflict.
“It’s awful,” Cumberbatch said. “What I would like to call myself a citizen of the world, but also as a father and a person, seeing children buried under the rubble of theaters, seeing pregnant women get injured in maternity wards, I just, you know, can’t believe it’s happening ».
Several actors lobbied at the academy for the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to speak at the ceremony, and Sean Penn promised to destroy his “Oscar” if the invitation is not given.
Jamie Lee Curtis wore as a ring a ribbon of Ukrainian blue, dressed in a northern blue image from animal rights activist Stella McCartney.
