The University of New Jersey is cutting its budget and cutting faculty. In response to a $12 million budget shortfall, the school is also cutting 37% of its academic programs. 30 teacher layoffs were announced, along with the termination of 48 undergraduate programs, 28 graduate programs, and others. NJCU Board Chairman Joseph Scott called the announcement “a challenging but necessary next step toward the long-term sustainability of the university’s mission.”
The school, a NJ Spotlight News underwriter, has already cut programs to save about $10 million last year. With all the cuts, the university is prepared to see its enrollment drop from 8,000 to 5,000.
