Gov. Phil Murphy approved Raja Mukherjee for a seat in the state Senate, giving the five-term MP approval less than a day after the new district redistribution legislative card created a new seat in Hudson County.
“Raj represents a new generation of leadership, and I know that the people of Jersey City and Hoboken do not have a better representative, so I enthusiastically support his candidacy for the State Senate,” Murphy said.
The redrawn 32nd constituency includes parts of Jersey City and Hoboken, with an open seat in the Senate that became available after two Democratic veteran veterans Nicholas Sacco (North Bergen) and Brian Stack (North Bergen) were singled out on the new map. Mukherjee, a five-term lawmaker and chairman of the Judicial Committee of the Assembly, appears to have quickly blocked Democratic support for running for the Senate. Just two hours after the final card was approved, Jersey City Mayor Stephen Fulop, Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhala and Stack announced their support for Mukherjee.
He now has Murphy, the incumbent leader of the New Jersey Democratic Party.
“For the past eight years, Raj Mukherjee has been a tireless fighter for the people of Hudson County, representing some of the most diverse communities in our state,” Murphy said. “As CEO who creates jobs, deputy mayor of his beloved Jersey City, local prosecutor or prolific lawmaker, Raj stood out and upheld progressive values and helped shape a stronger and fairer New Jersey.”
Murphy praised Mukherjee’s legislative achievements over more than eight years in Trenton, where he served as a majoritarian in the Assembly before serving as chairman of the judiciary in 2020.
“From investing in public transport to expanding Medicaid to meet basic health needs and increase funding for our public schools and open spaces, Raj has been my ally in the Assembly and will undoubtedly continue to build on his strong results of Senate progress.” said the governor.
The first elections on the new map will take place in 2023.
