Joseph Muniz, a top political figure and close ally of North Bergen Mayor and state Sen. Nicholas Sacco, has resigned his seat on the board of directors of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey.

Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin asked Muniz to resign after saying he would not nominate him for the $83,200-a-year board seat.

Muniz was appointed to the post by then-Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto in 2017. Coughlin kept Muniz as a holdover for the past two years, though Muniz played a key role in Prieto’s bid for another term as speaker.

Coughlin has not yet announced who he will choose to replace Muniz.

Under the new legislation re-establishing the HBCBS board, Coughlin and Senate President Nicholas Scutari will each receive two board appointments.
