The Murphy administration plans to release 852 inmates Sunday as part of a public health loan program that allows people to be released up to eight months early if they are in their final year of imprisonment. It comes about a month after another 260 people were released.
More than 5,000 inmates were released early as part of the first bypass of the program, which was resumed when Gov. Phil Murphy declared another health emergency in January. Although the health emergency is over, additional prisoners may be released by November for people who have accumulated enough health loans for early release.
