According to officials, on Wednesday around 3 a.m. officers were called to quarter 400 at Meadowview Lane in Mont-Claire for a family member who was suffering from a mental emergency.
The caller said that the man, who has since been identified as David Navumenko, had a mental disorder. The interlocutor said that Navumenko “has a weapon” and he is leaving their place of residence, but he is “harmless”, officials said.
According to officials, the officer in charge found Navumenko and his wife Katsyaryna in a white truck.
The officer approached the truck and asked, “What’s going on?” Officials then said Navumenko had started shooting at the officer.
After the first meeting, Navumenko drove his truck down Medeaview Lane and collided with a second Upper Providence police car that arrived on the scene, investigators said.
Police said Navumenko fired several shots at the car. The officer got out of the police car and sought shelter behind the other cars.
The second police officer called for reinforcements and provided Katsyaryna Navumenka. Police said David Navumenko continued to shoot at officers, but they kept cover and did not return fire.
The Limerick police officer in charge was able to enter the second-floor apartment and visually detect Navumenko from the window. As the suspect reloaded his weapon, Officer Limerick fired one shot, hitting Navumenko in the upper right arm, investigators said.
Special services officers drove in and took Navumenko into custody, where he was treated by ambulance and taken to the district hospital for treatment.
Detectives found several firearms and boxes of ammunition in the truck and at Navumenko’s residence. Navumenko does not have a permit to carry firearms, officials said.
Navumenko was charged with two counts: attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, assault on a law enforcement officer, assault under aggravating circumstances, threat of a catastrophe, and other related charges.
He is being held in a Montgomery County penal colony on $ 2 million bail.
