MP Donald Payne Jr. (D-Newark) has the support of Hillside Mayor Dalia Vertries as he seeks a renaming at the primaries from the Democratic Party on June 7, as the six-term congressman continues to sweep the New York election party in 10 -Jersey.
Payne was among a small group of Democrats who supported Vertries in her bid for a second term last year in a non-partisan municipal election.
“Congressman Payne has stood by me since day one, and his support was important for our team to win re-election last year,” Vertriz said. “I am proud to speak with Congressman Payne, who was a champion at Hillside and helped us deliver services to our residents by providing important federal funding and assistance.”
In addition to Vertriz, Payne received approval from the mayors of Newark, Jersey City and East Orange.
“Mayor Dalia Vertriz is one of the most dedicated elected officials in our state, and her victory last year showed that people stand behind her and see the progress she is making at Hillside,” Payne said. “As a young black woman mayor, she represents a new generation of leaders who will shape the direction of our communities for years to come, and I am proud to call her both a friend and one of our dearest supporters in this election. ”
Hillside is one of the eight municipalities in Union County in the 10th.
Payne faces the challenge at the primaries from the Democratic Party of Aquila Halfani, a sociology professor at Essex County College, and vagrant from Mount Bank Imani Oakley.
