Just after 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, police received a 911 call about shots fired at 4,400 blocks of Fairmount Avenue.
Officers who responded to the scene found a 23-year-old man lying between two houses on the 700th block of 44th Street who received multiple shots to the body.
The man was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Police have learned that a 23-year-old man allegedly entered the fenced area of the house on Fairmount Avenue and then threw bricks into the window of a 2018 Alfa Romeo SUV standing in the yard.
Authorities say the 49-year-old homeowner heard noise coming from his yard and went out to confront the intruders.
The owner then shot the 23-year-old man, police said.
“We believe the homeowner fired at least three shots from a semi-automatic weapon. We love the three bullet casings in the backyard, ”said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.
The 23-year-old ran about a block from the scene before collapsing, Small said.
The brick was found on the seat of the SUV driver.
Police also found a weapon in the owner of the house. Small said he was cooperating with the investigation.
Before receiving the report of the shots, Small said police received several calls about a masked man breaking into the back or property in the area, and one call about a man breaking into a vehicle.
“We believe these calls are related to the shooting,” Small said.
The 23-year-old is known to police and his last known address is two blocks from where he was shot, Small said.
