The critically acclaimed novel became a three-time Academy Award-winning filmDangerous connections» now adapted into a Stars series premieres November 6.
According to the official synopsis, Liaisons Dangerous is a daring prelude to Laclau’s classic 18th-century novel that focuses on the origin story of its iconic characters, the Marquise de Merteil (Alice Englert) and the Vicomte de Valmont (Nicolas Denton), who met passionately young lovers in Paris on the eve of the revolution. This contemporary take on the classic story takes viewers through wonder and horror, beauty and degradation, seduction and deception in pre-revolutionary Paris. The young couple’s survival as they seek to right the wrongs of their past depends on their skills in seducing and manipulating not only the French nobility, but each other as well. The current Marquise de Merteil (Leslie Manville) navigates his own path in the human world, using the power of secrets to regain control, and Valmont, who will stop at nothing to reclaim his recently stripped title. Their love story is the heart of the series.
The cast also includes Kosar Ali, Carys van Houten, Hilton Pelser, Fisayo Akinade, Michael McElhatton, Nathanael Saleh, Kalet Dalal Chancho, Hakim Kaye-Kazim and Tom Ulashikha.
Set in 1700s Paris, Pierre Chauderle de Laclau’s 1782 epistolary novel Dangerous Liaisons was adapted into a 1988 film directed by Stephen Frees, starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer, which received three Oscars, including Best Adapted Screenplay.
The novel later inspired the 90s classic film Cruel Intentions.
The Starz series Dangerous Liaisons is created and written by Harriet Warner, who also serves as showrunner and executive producer. Dangerous Liaisons is produced for STARZ Playground and Flame Ventures in association with Lionsgate Television. In addition to showrunner Warner, Colin Callender (Playground), Tony Krantz (Flame Ventures), Scott Huff, Bethan Jones and Christopher Hampton also serve as executive producers.
