CHELSEA, MANHATTEN (WABC) – The mayor of New York says the easing of COVID restrictions may happen soon, but it’s not entirely clear what it would like for the city.

Inside the Chelsea Market, where you can have a drink or go shopping, unmasked eateries merge into a common space with everyone else.

But if New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Wednesday that he is likely to loosen some mandates on indoor masks and vaccines, will these places soon become more crowded or smaller?

Some say they will avoid such markets.

“I think we need to be more diligent in our choices. So when these mandates end, I will be even more careful,” Ruben Mauricio said.

Others believe that New Yorkers are responsible, whether they have a mandate or not.

“I think people in New York are very smart,” Ashok Rajamani said.

It is not entirely clear how the mayor intends to soften the COVID rules, but he says things are going in the right direction.

Asked if he was ready to give up the masks soon, Mayor Adams said:

“Yes, and I can’t wait for it to be done. I’m taking off my hat in front of New Yorkers. Through masks, vaccines, social distancing. We’ve been overwhelmed by uncertainty, fear of COVID. I’m really proud of how we responded as New Yorkers.” “York,” Adams said.

The mayor said he would receive more details in the next few weeks.

But he added that the mandate, which requires vaccination of city workers, will continue.

Meanwhile in New Jersey Gov. Murphy says next Friday on the two-year anniversary of the state’s first case he hold the latest of their daily briefings on COVID.

“As we move to our new normal position and move from pandemic to endemic, we no longer need to gather here at a certain time every week,” Murphy said.

The governor says we are largely back to normal.

In crowded places like Chelsea Market, without masks, for a while it looked pretty normal.
