Maxine Messam, 53, was taken to Jacobi Medical Center Tuesday around 1:30 a.m. by two women who said they found her near Woodlon Cemetery.
They claimed the woman had sought their help and they had taken her to the hospital in her own BMW SUV.
The victim was half-naked without clothes from his belt.
Doctors later pronounced her dead at the hospital and then found several traces of injections on her buttocks.
Detectives are investigating whether she was the victim of a failed ass injection, and want to talk to the two women who dumped her in the hospital.
“There is no substitute for visiting a surgeon, a certified plastic surgeon who is trained in these procedures and is able to deal with complications when they unfortunately happen,” said Dr. Scott Glasberg.
Glasberg is a certified cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon from Manhattan who is helping New York State develop more safety guidelines for transplanting fat on the buttocks – a procedure that involves moving fat, usually from the abdomen to the buttocks.
In the US, three times more of these procedures are performed than 10 years ago, and they can cost more than $ 7,000, so some patients are looking for cheaper and less safe options.
In the case of Mesa, Jacobi doctors say it seems a foreign substance has been injected into her buttocks. Even if done correctly and by trained surgeons, there are risks.
“There are risks, one of those risks is getting into an artery or vein and getting fat into that artery or vein, which can be fatal,” Glasberg said.
Her death is being investigated as suspicious, and the official cause of death will be established by a forensic expert.
