Today, Stress Level Zero launches its virtual reality game Bonelab as the latest in its experimental physics series.

The developer of the previous title, Boneworks, is back again with simulated gameplay and physics-first interactions. And one of the great things about Bonelab is that you can modify it. The new title will debut on the Meta Quest 2 headset and other PC VR headsets.

The company said the first chapter of the game provides a quick introduction to basic concepts and combat before entering the main lab environment, which opens up different options. From the lab, players can try out many different levels to play and explore. After beating at least three levels, players can solve the crane puzzle and then find their way to the third part of the game.

The final sequence of levels can take some time and will introduce many new concepts. After that, players can continue to return to the physical sandbox, which has many unlockable objects.

Origins

In Bonelab, you have to get creative with eliminating skeletons and zombies.

The multi-layered narrative of Bonelab aligns perfectly with the narrative of Boneworks. Stress Level Zero may be familiar to early VR fans, having created Hover Junkers back in 2016.

Boneworks was originally released in 2019. This title received Steam’s Best of VR Platinum in 2019 and every year since.

The title is a continued evolution of Stress Level Zero’s Marrow1 VR physics framework, which was originally developed for Boneworks. Expanding and polishing the mechanics, Bonelab pushes further into simulation, offering seamless transitions between avatars, vehicles and enhanced physics customization, the company said.

The basic idea is that you explore a mysterious laboratory filled with weapons, enemies, challenges and secrets. You must escape your reality and escape the death sentence of being an outcast. You can also explore user-created levels.

You must find your way to a hidden underground research center deep in the city of MythOS. Players will encounter a series of challenging experiments and discoveries throughout the adventure. Using a variety of ranged, melee, and exotic physical weapons, players must battle enemies and solve puzzles with an arsenal of weapons. Custom avatar import allows for further experimentation with the player’s gameplay by providing appropriate modifications to physical characteristics.

At the same time, next-generation virtual reality gaming devices are now being sold in large numbers. Last year, only Oculus sold more VR headsets than Microsoft’s Xbox. According to market researcher IDC, sales of virtual reality devices will grow more than 92% year-over-year in 2021, and annual shipments are forecast to reach 50 million units by 2026. Of course, now that Meta has been hit by rising inflation and parts shortages, it has raised the price of Meta Quest 2 headsets by $100 this fall.

Stress Level Zero is supported by the Transcend Foundation.
