The Axelrod Contemporary Ballet Theater (AXCBT) returns to the Axelrod PAC stage over the weekend of April 8-10 with suites from West Side Story, American in Paris, Sounds of Music and more in a new show called Something Goes.
Led by AXCBT director Gabriel Teapot, “Something’s Coming” captures iconic moments from 10 favorite musicals.
The cast includes more than a dozen dancers from AXCBT, as well as special guest dancers from the Sarasota Ballet, Metropolitan Opera, Ailey School and others.
“We capture the most exciting moments of our favorite musicals and perform dances and songs live on stage,” says Chaynik. “My choreography pays tribute to some great authors such as Gene Kelly and Jerome Robbins, but with a modern flair that reflects my own vision and passion for this music. This is true American music at its best – George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, Richard Rogers – all composers who have written for both singers and dancers.
Kettle invited one of the graduates of Juilliard tenor David Smolakov (who played Tony in Axelrod’s production of “West Side Story”) and soprano Evie Ortiz (Maria on the national tour of “West Side Story”) to sing some of these iconic Hollywood songs.
The show has something for everyone – from Israeli folk dance to salsa to classical ballet.
“Something’s Coming” is a timely celebration of film musicals, says Axelrod’s artistic director Andrew Deprice. The musical lasted for several decades until Rob Marshall’s film “Chicago” was released on the big screen. Most recently, we saw John Chu’s “In the Heights” and “Tick, Tick… BOOM!” Lynn-Manuel Miranda! the film, not to mention this year’s Oscar-nominated “West Side Story” directed by Steven Spielberg. This AXCBT production will evoke favorite moments from some of the greatest musicals ever filmed. ”
“Something’s Coming” includes songs and suites from “West Side Story” and “An American in Paris”, as well as “Fiddler on the Roof”, “The Red Shoes”, “Brigadoon”, “Kiss Me, Kate” and “The Viz “. Viewers can expect to hear favorite songs such as “Tonight” and “Somewhere” by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, “Our Love Is Here to Stay” by George and Ira Gershwin, “De-Lovely” by Cole Porter, “The Sound of Music” and much more.
“I like how many different types of roles we can play,” says AXCBT artist Olivia Miranda. “At one point I dance on heels, and the next – on pointes. I think this production really speaks of our versatility as dancers. “
