Katy Perry is excited to return to the next season of “American Idol” by joining other judges Luke Brian and Lionel Richie. All three say they have learned a lot in the last four years.
“I think our filters are getting smaller and smaller, Judges, but our standards are getting higher and higher,” Perry said.
“Katie, Luke and Ryan are perfect partners,” Richie said. “We’re not executives, we’re artists. We know exactly what we had to go through to do it. We know what they have to go through to do it. Once they realize we’re here to care for them and help them , it’s a family. “
“I think we judges are really impressed when a child grows up, I have humility,” Brian said. “They don’t necessarily know they’re weird.”
Host Ryan Seacrest is celebrating his 20th season with a reality series, and he links the longevity of the show to his focus on future young talent.
“They’ve always dreamed about it, and they get a chance to be in front of the judges, and they get the spotlight on them,” Seacrest said. “But they have what you see and feel that is real, comfortable, confident, unique … Some 20 years later you think there is no one left – there are a lot of people left.”
“It’s really the epitome of the American dream,” Perry said. “We really want these kids to win.”
One new element this season: the best talents from three listening cities – Austin, Nashville and Los Angeles – received a “platinum ticket”. This gives them a “free pass” to one of the first rounds of the competition.
Season 20 begins Sunday at 8pm on ABC.
