Judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Brian are back in season 20 along with presenter Ryan Seacrest.
Participants are vying for a gold ticket to Hollywood, and in a new turn one participant from each city will be awarded a new platinum ticket. The new ticket is for the best overall performance in each city, which allows the singer to stand out in the first round of Hollywood Week.
SPOILER BEHAVIOR BEHIND HERE
The first participant of the season was Noah Thompson from Louise Kentucky. The 19-year-old builder had no plans to audition, but his best friend Arthur signed on to him because “he has so much talent” and he himself wouldn’t have signed up.
Luke Brian asked him to be a little more discreet in his speech, but he spoke well.
“You have an amazing voice with a real story,” Lionel Richie said.
In Normandy from Baltimore a squeaky high voice, but a singing voice, as in Adele. The difference is so drastic that Katy Perry ran out of the room when Proud Mary starts singing.
18-year-old Nicolina Boco, a student at the University of Toronto, performed a powerful performance of “She Used To Be Mine,” which lifted the judges to their feet.
Tyler Allen shared one of the most exciting stories to open his audition. An 18-wheeled car knocked down and killed his sister and nephew Noah, who was only 1 year old. Tyler found solace in music. At the audition, he sang a song that Noah sang.
At the speech, Katie sobbed and lifted all three judges.
“You’re a star,” Richie said.
Maddie Bell Gladwell is pathetic, but judges have said her voice requires work.
“Your voice needs to grow,” Luke Brian said.
Camryn Champion of Lumberton, New Jersey, and Daniel Finn of Los Angeles also looked as if they hadn’t arrived, but …
Grace Franklin, granddaughter of legend Aretha Franklin, performed the song Killing Me Softly with her eyes closed. Luke calls it “sleepy and humble”.
Katy Perry asked if the 15-year-old had any more songs. She tried again with her beloved grandmother ‘Ain’t No Way’. Although her performance was better than her introductory song, and won over Katy Perry, Luke and Lionel agreed that she still needed work.
“Come back when you’re ready,” Lionel said. “I don’t want it to be an accident and burn.”
HunterGirl is a 23-year-old country singer and songwriter from Winchester, Tennessee who works as a music therapist with veterans. She blew up the judges with her speech.
“I wrote the top 10 on my sheet,” Luke Brian said.
Cole Holman of New Jersey did not pick up a guitar until he was in high school.
Cole has already become a fan of his videos with his sister Katie, who has special needs. She came with him to audition in Nashville.
He admitted that he was nervous going to the audition.
Delaney Renee Wilson is a nanny from Massachusetts who went viral thanks to a share in TikTok by her boss Nicki Maher.
She sang “Opportunity” by Sia.
After her speech, Luke Brian summed it up well: “From TikTok to Tinseltown!”
Taylor’s original song by Jalen Fagins convinced the producers to contact him at a school in Harlem. Fagins performed the song for his audition.
As for the first Platinum Ticket …. received by HunterGirl, who learned about it during a performance at Luke Brian’s bar in Nashville.
