A member of the Newark City Council pleaded guilty to conspiring with an ally to destroy companies, receive bribes and kickbacks from contractors looking for development and construction projects in the city. Joseph McCallum Jr. admitted to participating in a scheme that included a $ 16,000 bribe from a contractor company and a $ 25,000 bribe and rollback from a developer company.
On Tuesday, McCallum pleaded guilty to one charge of fraud with honest services and one charge of filing a false tax return. His accomplice pleaded guilty to a similar charge in 2020. The maximum penalty for fraud is 20 years in prison and a $ 250,000 fine. McCallum will be sentenced on July 21.
