A CCTV broadcaster reported that the crash took place on a Boeing 737 China Eastern Airlines and took place near the city of Wuzhou in Teng County.
It says rescuers have been sent and has not yet reported the death toll.
Shanghai-based China Eastern is one of China’s top three airlines with a variety of domestic and international routes serving 248 destinations.
According to the FlightRadar24 flight tracking site, the crashed flight was flight № MU5735 from Kunming to Guangzhou. It showed that the Boeing 737-89P quickly lost speed after 6:20 a.m. Greenwich before a sharp descent.
The plane stopped transmitting data southwest of the Chinese city of Wuzhou.
The aircraft was delivered to China Eastern from Boeing in June 2015 and flew for more than six years.
The twin-engine, single-pass Boeing 737 is one of the world’s most popular aircraft for short and medium flights.
China Eastern operates several versions of conventional aircraft, including the 737-800 and 737 Max.
Version 737 Max was discontinued worldwide after two fatal crashes. China’s aviation regulator allowed the aircraft to return to service late last year, making the country the last major market to do so.
The last fatal crash of a civilian liner in China occurred in 2010.
