STATEN ISLAND, New York (WABC) – A 10-year-old student survived a fatal episode while exercising on Wednesday.

Police say that when they responded to PS 78 on Staten Island, they found the boy unconscious and did not respond without obvious signs of injury.

The boy was taken to the Medical Center of the University of Richmond, where he was pronounced dead.

Preliminary investigation shows that the boy was engaged in physical activity during physical education when he collapsed.

“There are no words that could relieve the burden of this loss for friends, family and the entire PS 78 community. I know that the memory of this student will live on in the lives he has touched and that he will truly miss my deepest condolences to all those affected by this horrific tragedy, and I know that the educators and staff of IS 78 will be there for the young people at this difficult time. ” said in a statement New York City Chancellor David S. Banks.
