VALLEY STREAM, LONG ISLAND (WABC) – Nassau County Police are investigating after a man was shot dead at the Green Acres Mall on Long Island.

The 911 call came in just after 4:30 p.m. Monday.

The victim was shot in the leg near Famous Footwear and was taken to hospital.

Police said he was shot in front of the counter and hid behind the counter.

Famous Footwear says the victim was not one of their employees. President Mike Edwards issued a statement on the incident:

“We know about the shooting at one of our stores in the Green Acres mall in South Valley Stream. First of all, we hope the victim is okay, as well as everyone who witnessed the crime. It’s a tragic situation and we work closely together with the police as they investigate what happened. ”

Authorities believe that the victim and the suspect knew each other, and a small verbal quarrel took place before the shooting.

The mall was closed immediately after the shooting.

Police are questioning eyewitnesses and possibly stakeholders.

Several other details have been published.
