New Mexico’s third education secretary in four years has announced his retirement, saying he needs to focus on his family and his health.
According to the Albuquerque Journal, Kurt Steinhaus’ last day on the job was Friday. He entered the administration in 2021.
The newspaper reported that Steinhaus is the third Cabinet secretary in four days to reveal plans to leave the administration of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham.

Three other senior officials outside the Cabinet also announced their departures in the past 10 days.
Lujan Grisham said in a written statement that Steinhaus leaves public education in a better place and deserves a happy retirement.
Kurt Steinhaus, New Mexico’s secretary of public education, said he plans to retire to focus on his family and his health.
Steinhaus, a retired Los Alamos schools superintendent, oversaw the implementation of the new social studies standards and helped lead the state’s response to the 2018 court ruling. New Mexico violated the rights of some students by not providing adequate public education.
The turnover comes amid a 60-day legislative session in which lawmakers are considering ways to improve public school performance.

Lujan Grisham will seek his fourth Secretary of Education in four years.
The magazine writes that Lujan Grisham’s predecessor, Susana Martinez, had only two secretaries of public education in eight years and one of them served more than six years.
But Lujan Grisham’s administration noted that her tenure coincided with the pandemic, adding to the stress of what is already a high-pressure job, the newspaper reported.
