The Garden State survived uncomfortable weather for most of last week, with temperatures below 90 degrees across much of the area. Relief is expected no earlier than next week.

The heat index, a measure of how hot it will feel after taking humidity into account, was in the mid-to-upper 90s but could soar “very close to 100 degrees” Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

A heat wave across the United States has been extreme this summer, with catastrophic flooding in the Midwest and drought in the Northeast, including parts of New Jersey, according to Accuweather.com.

There is a low risk of rip currents for the Jersey Shore and Delaware on Saturday, but increases to moderate and “life threatening” along the Long Island coastline, the National Weather Service said.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms, which may occur in some parts of the state between 1pm and 7pm, will do little to cool the region. The heat returns Sunday and Monday with highs between 95 and 100 degrees, the weather service said.

Cooler weather is forecast for Tuesday, with a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms, according to the weather service.

Rip currents can be potentially life-threatening to swimmers on Long Island’s south shore, while the Jersey Shore poses less of a risk.National Weather Service
