After the pandemic and a flood that devastated his headquarters, the original Montclair festival is back in force for its 11th year. The Montclair Film Festival’s trademark catalog, rolling out next week, is filled with a staggering number of films — 61 features and 68 shorts — and special events. Top Hollywood talent including Daniel Craig, Eddie Redmayne and Brendan Fraser join local hero Stephen Colbert for personal conversations.
The full movie schedule will be available on September 30, but Montclair Film released some highlights on Friday to whet audiences’ appetites.
“Each year we work hard to bring bold, thought-provoking films to Montclair, and we’re incredibly grateful to this year’s special guests for taking the time to join us and share their wonderful work with our audiences,” said a Montclair employee. Film – director Tom Hall. “We are honored to welcome these talented artists to this year’s festival, from Daniel Craig, Brendan Fraser and Eddie Redmayne to the powerful debut of New Jersey’s own Elegance Bratton.”
The parties are back too. After a two-year hiatus, the opening party will take place at Porta Restaurant on Bloomfield Avenue. There’s also a director’s breakfast open to the public and a screening of the film on October 29 The Rocky Horror Show, with The Ordinary Kids live. Costumes are encouraged.

where: The Wellmont Theatre, Montclair
What: The first film will be Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, starring Daniel Craig as a detective who travels to Greece to solve a mystery involving a group of colorful suspects. Leslie Odom Jr. and Kate Hudson.
Breakthrough Director and Writer Award
If: 3:30 p.m., October 22
where: The Wellmont Theatre, Montclair
What: Elegance Breton will be honored with the festival’s director and screenwriter award following the screening of her new film, Review. The movement “For Freedom” calls the film “a searing portrait of hard-won self-discovery.” He became the winner of the festival in the nomination “Breakthrough Film 2022”.
Patrick and the whale
If: noon on October 23
where: The Wellmont Theatre, Montclair
What: Mark Fletcher’s Patrick and the Whale is featured as the centerpiece of the Freedom Movement documentary, with subject Patrick Dykstra in attendance for a post-screening question and answer session. MFF says it “explores the fascinating nature of the sperm whale, attempting to shed light on its intelligence and complexity, and highlighting its current and past relationships with humanity.”

What: Darren Oranfasca’s “The Whale” is shown as a special event, with star Brendan Fraser joining Stephen Colbert for a post-screening Q&A. MFF says it’s “the story of Charlie (Brandon Fraser), a reclusive English teacher living with severe obesity who tries to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter Ellie (Sadie Sink) for one last chance at redemption.”

where: Montclair Kimberley Academy’s Upper School, Montclair
What: The movement “For Freedom” will close with Maria Shrader’s film “She Said”. A film about the events that inspired the #METOO movement in Hollywood. The Freedom Movement says it shows “the process and power of good journalism and how we depend on reporters to bring injustice to light at a time when the truth still has the power to change the world.”
