Where will you find Riley McCann on the football field?
Answer: almost everywhere. The senior showed off his all-around skills with a standout performance in Watchung Hills’ big win over St. Louis. Joseph-Metuchen by a score of 30-7 last week.
The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder kicked field goals of 50 and 32 yards and was 4-for-4 on extra points. PATs. Often, elite kickers just kick. McCann, however, also plays receiver and safety.
He also had a 65-yard touchdown pass and an interception last Saturday as the red-hot Warriors won their fourth straight game.
Readers voted McCann the Big Central Conference Football Player of the Week at MyCentralJersey.com in an online poll open to the public. He surprisingly got just under 85,000 votes or 54 percent of the 157,000 votes cast.
“Riley has been a big contributor to our team on all three ends,” Watchung Hills coach Rich Seubert said. “Makes plays for us at WR, DB, and is one of the best kickers and punters in the state. All the hard work he’s put in has really paid off this season.”
Watchung Hills has a playoff spot as the No. 5 seed in the North Group of 5 before its regular season finale against Elizabeth. McCann is a true student-athlete and notes his 3.8 GPA in his Twitter bio.
“I’m really proud of the leader he’s become this season both on and off the field,” Seubert said. “Riley plays the game right and also gets the job done in the classroom.”
